Dear Manager

Julie French

I’ll bet it's not always smooth running in your workplace! I'll take a guess you've had niggling problems or even big issues to resolve that cost you time and lost productivity. I'll extend my mind reading abilities even further and suggest that these issues involved people! People not getting on with people, people communicating poorly, people making your life difficult, people being people!

Having been a manager for many years I know this is a safe prediction

I remember my very first day as a manager. When I walked into the office on that first morning, I had no idea that conflict, in the form of a team member, would be there to greet me! I was green. I hadn’t a clue how to handle it so I turned to another, well seasoned manager for advice. He’s bound to have the answer I thought. He’s been managing people for years; he must know what to do...

Well what I got were these words of wisdom. ‘Leave well alone’ he said. ‘Treat her like you want other people to treat you and she’ll soon mellow’. So I duly did and what do you think happened?

Well, two years and much anguish later….

I woke up, in the middle of the night, and It hit me…right between the eyes….THIS ISN’T WORKING!

It’s at times like this, exhausted, battered and weather beaten you realise, something has to change. You can’t go on doing what you’ve always done and expect different results. I have to say I had not idea what to do next I just knew  there must be a better way, so I decided to take a step back and start ‘people watching’ and a curious thing happened….

I realised something quite fundamental that started me on a whole new path of discovery and investigation

It’s amazing how much there is to notice about human beings and their behaviour! It’s almost like there’s a hidden language beneath the words, a code to be deciphered…

For one thing, it struck me just how very different people actually are.

Here’s an example. If you publicly praise one person, they’ll be your friend for life. If you publicly praise another person, they’ll be upset and offended and probably won’t speak to you for three weeks! If you don’t get it right, tensions can spill out and spread like a disease

 Here’s something else I noticed

There are rules to getting the best out of people

And that’s not all. Once you discover what the rules are, how they work and how to put them into practice things start getting a lot easier. You feel more in control. You start learning how to read people. You discover what makes them tick! You begin to know how to respond and how to adapt to diffuse difficult situations.

All of a sudden you realise that you are one of those managers who has a particular skill with people and not only that….you’re on good terms with your staff, your colleagues and your boss! Life at work starts to feel a whole lot more enjoyable and curiously life at home feels easier too!

Now, if you’re a manager reading this and you’re thinking, well that’s all very well but I don’t have these so called ‘conflict handling secrets’. I’m struggling with trying to handle a difficult team member or a boss who won’t listen or colleague who’s a cold fish or a team that’s at war…..take heart - you’re not alone!

The truth is, for many managers, the ‘people management’ aspects of the job are a real challenge

Managing people isn’t easy.  People can seem irrational, unpredictable and downright difficult. When you don’t have the right help, it can be baffling. The question is, why do people behave and respond in the ways they do?

Not only that…

Being a manager is demanding enough as it is these days. It’s not just increasing workloads, unrelenting targets and impossible deadlines. Many managers are struggling just to keep their heads above water.

It’s understandable why we heard a resounding groan from some managers when they realised new regulations would be landing on their desks in April 2009. The regulations are clear. It’s now your responsibility as a manager to nip conflict situations in the bud informally and early….and rightly so. Most would agree this is a much more cost effective and sensible approach to conflict management than formal more time consuming processes

The only thing is, if you haven’t got the right ‘equipment’; the right knowledge, the right understanding, the right skills and tools you’ll join the foundering many

Trying to handle conflict when you don’t know what you’re doing is like playing darts blindfold…

…..occasionally you get lucky and hit the dartboard but more often than not the dart goes wide off the mark!

"This was a very constructive day. The style Julie uses put all of us at ease incredibly quickly and we all felt that we knew each other very quickly which led to really effective working. Lovely atmosphere too"

So how can you increase your chances of pinpointing the bull’s-eye every time?

Well here’s the good news, there is a way! It’s a proven system and a set of tools that’s easy to learn, easy to use, easy to apply and highly effective!

  • It’s used by over one million people world-wide every year and it’s making a significant tangible difference to managers, like you, consistently and effectively every day!

  • It all started as a theory back in the 1920’s by an American psychologist called William Moulton Marston and has developed over the years into a research based personal profiling system that gives you unprecedented insights into your own and other people’s behaviour.
  • It’s not just the insights though…you get a step by step guidance and a host of practical strategies for handling people who are different from yourself.

  • It all begins with self-awareness and goes on to develop ‘other-awareness’ and ‘situation-awareness’. Wonderful things start to happen when you expand your viewpoint

This one day Masterclass specifically for managers...

...called ‘World Class Conflict Handling ' is the quickest and easiest way to learn these secrets, discover the system, find out how to use the tools and then take them back to your workplace to solve problems with your team, colleagues and boss.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to take time out to reflect on my practice and challenge my thinking. A varied, enjoyable and interactive day that I know will influence my practice as a manager"

Mary-Anne Darlow

Clinical Services Manager

Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases

On this powerful one-day course, you will:

  • Access essential people-management skills you can apply immediately to help you build a stronger more cohesive team and get the best out of your staff

  • Understand how the DiSC® model and the four DiSC® behavioural styles work. This opens your eyes to how DiSC® styles are currently affecting your workplace relationships and how to turn things around quickly.

  • Discover what’s been getting in the way for you. This workshop is for you and about you. In order to make it even more meaningful you’ll complete an online DiSC® profile questionnaire prior to attending. Then at the workshop you’ll get to go through and examine your own personalised 20 page profile report - all about YOU!

  • Recognise other people’s unique ways of handling conflict and understand the impact of their behaviour on you and their colleagues. People are different. They’re motivated by different things. They have different priorities, goals, fears, aspirations and drivers. They also have different responses to conflict. Unless you understand how to handle these differences, you won’t handle the conflict!

  • Recognise when conflict is brewing and nip it in the bud. The ability to spot early when a conversation is going off the rails is critical. What you say and do at this point will determine whether you move into conflict or towards more harmonious understanding and problem solving

  • Build empathy and compassion for the needs and struggles of others. We find that when managers understand what’s driving people’s behaviour, they feel more tolerance and this in itself reduces conflict

  • Know that prevention is often better than cure! By understanding what triggers conflict for different people, you’ll know what mistakes to avoid.

  • Learn the key words and phrases that have the most impact for connection and co-operation with each style. The language you use and the and the way you express yourself makes a massive difference to the results you’ll get
  • Discover the art of people reading with DiSC®! You’ll find out how to detect the styles of people you come into contact with. The signs are there are you’ll learn how to notice them!

  • Specific strategies and a practical action plan to help you overcome the challenges of working with someone with a very different style.

"Thank you very much for a really positive experience that will help me face the day to day challenges of managing people."

She’s a highly experienced trainer and coach with a unique blend of qualifications and expertise in human resources, psychology, organisational development, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Intelligence and the use of profiling (such as DiSC®) to support organisational success.

With a belief that simple solutions expertly delivered give great results and a style that balances warmth with challenge Sarah gets a huge buzz from helping people, teams and organisations thrive.

So, what does Sarah have to say about the subject of our workshops? “I’ve experienced some cracking moments in workshops and one to one coaching when the ‘secret’ of handling conflict at work is revealed for people. They visibly relax, it’s like “phew! – at last! A workable structure and set of simple rules I can easily apply”. There is a sense of relief and optimism about going back to work and getting the best from their teams. This is essential stuff for any manager”

Julie French

Julie French

I run the Academy of High Achievers Ltd with my business partner Tony (who’s also my life partner)

Previously a Senior Manager and board member in the social and healthcare sector, I started my first training and coaching business 10 years ago this November!

Helping managers and teams to handle conflict has been a passion of mine for many years, probably because of some horrendous experiences as a manager myself. I just knew there had to be a better way and went out of my way to find easy to apply solutions for the teams and managers I was working with

DiSC® offered me just that!

Past and present  clients include Toyota UK, Tarmac, Siemens, Crystal Martin International and a number of Primary Care Trusts, to name but a few!

In addition to coaching and training with DiSC®, I’m an NLP trainer, Executive Coach, Emotional Intelligence facilitator and keynote speaker.

"Fantastic day! Excellent presentations and active involvement of us all. Nice to be in a small group scenario. Would highly recommend Aha! to everyone."
